DARK
PAWNS

A Multi-User DungeonEST. 1994

Recorded by the people who were there

Dark Pawns began in 1994.

“Like a great game of chess, the world has become a board filled with bishops and kings, stately queens, white knights and dark pawns striving to rise through the ranks into godhood.”

R.E. Paret (Frontline), original Dark Pawns website

I found it later.

My first character was MisterYuck. I later played as Aiko and Aidan, and I ran dp-players.com while I was still active in the game.

I stepped away around 2005 when my career started. Dark Pawns shut down around 2010, but the source code and world files were eventually published.

In 2026, I started porting the server to Go. I am also recovering what is left of the old websites.

The short version

The record so far

The early chronology comes from Frontline’s history of Dark Pawns, itself an update to an account by Orodreth. Later dates use Frontline’s published repository and contemporary records from the DPReturns revival.

  1. Dark Pawns begins

Serapis and Tracer start the game on CircleMUD 1.7 at knight.ufp.org.

  2. The first major change

The base code moves to CircleMUD 2.2. The game becomes Dark Pawns 1.0.

  3. Coders and builders arrive

Arak and Orodreth join as coders in February; Frontline follows in March while Oddity, Nimos, and Aralius build the world.

  4. Dark Pawns 2.2

Frontline and Orodreth become co-implementors in May. The largest update in the game’s history ships that December.

  5. The break-in

An intruder destroys the server files. Backups recover part of the game, but player data and significant work on 3.0 are lost.

  6. The public server closes

The old Dark Pawns server shuts down. Frontline later publishes its code and world in the state they held at closure.

  7. DPReturns

Former players reopen Dark Pawns. Their revival continues at darkpawns.net.

  8. The Go restoration

A new open-source server begins loading the original world under a strict fidelity rule: the game is the game.

The players returned first

DPReturns

Former players reopened Dark Pawns in 2019. Slayer served as Implementor and webmaster through 2021, and Vintage took over as Implementor in 2022. The active home of DPReturns is darkpawns.net.

The public record covers part of the revival. The remaining gaps need to be filled by the people who were there.
