About Dark Pawns / DPReturns
Dark Pawns Returns, 2019 to now.
Dark Pawns closed around 2010. In 2019, former players brought it back. This is what we can document about that revival without pretending the public record is complete.
What we know
The first public reopening announcement appeared on October 30, 2019. It called the project Dark Pawns Returns and directed players to dpreturns.com:6969.
The project’s own README says Slayer served as Implementor and webmaster until 2021. Vintage took over as Implementor in 2022 and created the public repository to capture Slayer’s work. The repository also says that many others have contributed to the world since then.
The dates do not line up perfectly. The README calls the version a 2020 fork, while the reopening announcement and first public commit both date to 2019. We have kept that discrepancy visible.
The public record
A working chronology
Former players reopen Dark Pawns
A public announcement invited players to connect to dpreturns.com on port 6969. It described the revival as the work of former Dark Pawns players.
Reopening announcementThe revival code reaches GitHub
The first commit in the public darkpawns-returns repository records the initial fork. A second commit restored house item saving a few days later.
Repository historySlayer runs the revival
The project README names Slayer as Implementor and webmaster through 2021. Public posts in 2020 and 2021 continued to invite players back.
Project READMEVintage takes over
The project README says Vintage became Implementor in 2022 and used the repository to preserve the work done by Slayer. Commits from that year include build repairs, world updates, and quest work.
README and commitsSnapshots of a living codebase
Later commits preserve successive states of the game in 2023, 2024, and May 2026. The repository has no formal releases or tags, so these snapshots are the clearest public development record.
