I ran across this link the other day and as you can see, the last advertisement in a newsgroup of dark pawns is 05/05/95 - I'm positive steps have been taken since then but to little effect.
what I've noticed over the years, however, is that most people don't see an ad and start playing (unless it's a really good ad). most people play because friends of their's play. keeping that in mind, there are a few things we can do as a playerbase that can positively benefit the mud.
mud forums: if you converse in a mud forum, stick a link in your signature. either point it here, darkpawns.com, or telnet://pawns.wolfpaw.net:4300
tell your friends! - if you have a friend with a computer who can read, tell them about dp and get them involved. they will be much more likely to play and stay if they already know someone.
what other creative ways are there to advertise?\

Well, everyone from my area got started because they knew someone else who played (if you trace it back far enough, Vint and Az started it all in E. NC, but I'm not sure where they found out about it). I've told some people that I play other games with about DP, but they usually play for a few minutes before going back to thier other game.... Can't think of any especially effective way of advertising, besides telling irl friends about it.\

I played a ... GRAPHICAL GAME!!!!! Hatsumi played Rogue Spear, and I played a few early morning sniper games with him a few times. He told me one day that he was playing a mud. He then explained it to me and I tried it out. So this seems to be an effective method since I have been here 4-5 years...\

Lets just say Loma, Deth, Darkmacaw, AzureDrake and I used to hang out in an AOL chat room together. There were several others there who played DP, but I can't remember who they were. When Terris became Pay for Play in 1996 or 1997 I became bored. After some time passed I finally jumped on the DP band wagon and played with them. I was hooked for life. Told my cousin, prodigy, about it. He still plays too.\

Yeah. Vargus, Shteven, and I started playing after Ryu(shteven's bro) got him to play some. Vargs, Steve and I played Broodwars together and were in the same clan along with Viper, who followed shortly after we did along with a couple other players that never stuck to it. I can't imagine being drawn to dark pawns(or any other mud) in another way. The idea seemed retarded to me the first time I logged on, but after a while you get adjusted. "Who plays text based games...in the 90's?"\

Whistler — Tue May 04, 2004 10:50 am

Ahem... you're past the 90's, and still playing\

sinko — Tue May 04, 2004 1:13 pm

Ahem... you're past the 90's, and still playing Heh. That quote was from the 90's! Sadly, you are still correct.;(\

aidan — Tue May 04, 2004 2:25 pm

asier is the one that got me playing. I used to make fun of him for playing a stupid text game... the rest is history\

noogie — Tue May 04, 2004 3:54 pm

Haha, my friend and former next door neighbor "Hornet" got me hooked. I used to make fun of him for text games too, and challenged his manhood for it........all I have to say is curse you for infecting me with this prion-like disease.
Now to discuss advertising......
For other muds I have played on or worked on, I find that leaving good reviews on sites such as the Mudconnector can really reel in new players. The hard part is keeping honest with your claims. Hopefully people on DP will have a little more tolerance for new players than in the present and past. As long as I have mudded here the word "newbie" is a definate derrogatory term. Thus, anyone falling in the category of the intended definition of newbie, finds their first days here rather repulsive. A change in attitude by the player base for new people, and realizing they won't log on and automatically be the cream of the crop is much needed if advertisment is to be effective in hooking long-term players. Nobody wants to come to a mud where the general feeling is "nobody deserves to play here but me."\

Vintage — Tue May 04, 2004 6:40 pm

But noone does deserve to play here but me...
Regardless, if someone is to write a review I believe it should be a COMPETENT person that has played the game for a while. I have seen a few reviews on mudconnector that seem as if they were written by a pox-riddled infant. What the pox has to do with it is beyond me, but it is important. I swear. An experienced player would be best suited for this job because they can offer insight some of the newer players can't.
P.S - Don't call DP a simple hack and slash in the review!\

aidan — Tue May 04, 2004 7:00 pm

ok, it appears as though telling your friends and writing reviews on mudconnector are the two best ways of going about this.
well, what are you guys waiting for?\

sinko — Thu May 06, 2004 2:40 pm

Unfortunately I have no friends and I'm banned from posting on MC.\

Fred Sanford — Fri May 07, 2004 10:04 am

I'll make sure to inform all the local cocaine and heroin dealers about the coolness of dark pawns. I'm on it, man.\

aidan — Sat May 08, 2004 12:14 am

well, if you're lazy and don't feel like writing an entire review or having to think or anything... or you don't have any friends...
